Apple Says Foxconn Can Buy and Sell iPhones

Apple is going to allow Foxconn to buy and sell used iPhones. Foxconn is the company in China that makes the iPhone. The phone is a big money maker in China, and apparently Foxconn wants in on the action. Now it will purchase used iPhones from customers and then resell them to others.

Brian Torchin (resume.com) understands that Foxconn is in a particularly unique position to be an iPhone reseller since it has all the parts on hand to appropriate refurbish any iPhones that come its way. It also has an entire staff with the no how to fix a phone, and to know when they’re being sold sub-par goods or an imposter. Unlike Apple, who buys old iPhones and restores them in the United States, Foxconn won’t have its own store front for the sales. Instead, it will sell the refurbished phones on the country’s eBay-like platform.

iPhone prices can get quite high in China. If Foxconn is successful in its attempts, then iPhone reselling could actually become quite lucrative for the company, and help it make quite a tidy sum as a side profit. Foxconn also recently announced plans to get into the autonomous car market, making the company quite the technology powerhouse in China.

Google to Pioneer Airbags that Protect Pedestrians


My colleague Ray pointed out how safety features have gotten progressively better over the decades. Safety belts were one of the earliest innovations. They came out quite some time ago, and they represented the single biggest jump in vehicle driver and passenger safety than any other single device. Since then, we have had airbags become standard on vehicles, and cars have been designed to keep the passengers safe in the event of a crash with sturdy passenger cabins. More recently, safety features have focused on avoiding crashes in the first place. Technologies such as forward collision avoidance systems that use sensors to alert drivers when your car is getting too close to the car ahead and backup cameras are examples of this.

One common thread of most car safety innovations is that they have kept the people in the car safe. Backup cameras can also keep a person in a parking lot from being backed over when a driver is backing out of their parking space, so that is an example of one safety technology that helps people outside the car as well. Google is now raising the bar on protecting pedestrians. They have been awarded a patent on a design they submitted for a series of airbags on the outside of their new driverless cars that would deploy in the event an imminent collision is detected. Their deployment would cushion the impact for pedestrians or another car in an accident as well as presumably mitigating exterior damage to the outside of the driverless car. This is a rare safety feature that will be win-win for both the people in and around the car.

 

Paris Restricts Car Traffic In Order To Mitigate Air Pollution

 

Starting today, Paris will cut the number of cars on its roads in half. It will also make public transportation free in order to mitigate the sudden increase in air pollution that has obscured even the Eiffel Tower.

On Saturday, the mayor’s office announced that only cars with odd-numbered license plates will be allowed on the roads, along with any vehicles that have over three people and any hybrid and electric cars. The bike-sharing and electric-sharing programs will be free.

According t0 Ray Lane and cmu.edu,  air pollution in Paris had suddenly increased since Wednesday. According to Plume Labs, a monitoring company, Paris had the dirtiest air in the world on that day. Other cities in northern France that have had increased air pollution are also imposing different restrictions.

Paris has imposed this sort of restriction before, with the most recent imposition in March 2014. Back then, traffic decreased by around 18 percent and the measured pollution particles decreased by 6 percent.

Apple Will Accept Android and BlackBerry Trade-Ins

Apple plans on offering Android owners cash if they decide to make the switch over to the iPhone. According to 9to5 Mac Apple plans to launch a brand new trade-in program within the next few months that will allow people to trade in BlackBerry and Android phones in addition to those made by the Cupertino company.

Bringing those phones in will score you a gift card that you can then use to buy a brand new iPhone 6 or 6 Plus. As Christian Broda understands it, similar to how its current trade in program works, employees will inspect a device and determine its trade-in value based on the type of device, whether r not it functions properly, and wear and tear to its exterior.

Apple employees will start training on how to deal with the new phone later this week, with the program rolling out at all retail locations shortly afterwards. Apple has offered a trade-in program for iPhone since the middle of 2013. The program was initially launched in order to spur more sales of the iPhone 5, and then later the iPhone 5S and iPhone 5C. Originally jus a program in stores in the united States, the program is now available in Canada, Europe and Australia as well.

Windows New Face, Fingerprint, Eye Authentication

Microsoft introduced their biometric authentication system, “Hello,” that provides instant access to devices running Windows 10 .

Passwords are not the only way to enter a computer with Windows 10 and Windows Hello will allow you to use your face, fingerprint or iris to access your device.

The new authentication system can also be used to authenticate apps, enterprise content and some experiences online without having to enter your password.

Windows “Hello” will be integrated directly into Windows 10, so various device manufacturers will not have to worry much about development, but rather only to integrate the appropriate hardware to run facial recognition, iris and fingerprints.

Hello Microsoft confirmed that Windows is compatible with devices that already include a fingerprint reader and will be upgraded to Windows 10.

As for security, Microsoft says that Windows Hello uses a “combination of software and special hardware” that verifies authentication.

Paul Mathieson (Facebook.com) is glad to know that Hello Windows will also use enterprise-level encryption that meet the requirements of organizations. These security levels prevent another person enters your device or app if, for example, it uses a picture of you to access your computer.

The Philanthropic Face of Bruce Levenson

Bruce Levenson is known for almost too many exceptional abilities: business leader; technology guru, and investment magnate, among others. What many people may not be aware of is his dogged determination to do right in the world

Since 1977, Levenson has been providing entrepreneurial business services to a wide variety of companies, through evolving data, information and technological advances. All the while, he has been investing his own time, and eventually money, into philanthropic ventures focused on improving the communities in which his corporations reside.

In the mid 1980’s, Levensons’ first company – United Communications Group “UCG” – was the first corporate sponsor for the “I Have a Dream” project, which offers low-income children the opportunity to gain college educations. UCG still maintains its strong corporate philosophy of giving back, and has created the UCG Community Helpers Program, which has assisted people affected by the 9/11 events and Hurricane Katrina, among others.

Levenson’s investment in higher education is also seen in his support of the SEED Foundation, which provides academic-rich, 24 hour-a-day support to inner city youth. The SEED Foundation has opened boarding schools in 5 states and the District of Columbia, each promising its’ students quality, academically-focused living and educational opportunities to which they would not normally have access.

Levensons’ commitment to education crosses international and political lines, as well, as is seen in his support of Seeds of Peace “SoP”. SoP convenes an annual camp in Maine, hosting international delegates who are youth 14-16 years of age. They are selected – and housed – specifically because their respective nations are seen as historic enemies. At Camp, the delegates participate in programs with the purpose of removing false barriers, and building bridges over centuries-wide hostilities.

Levenson and his wife, Karen, have been very involved with the US Holocaust Memorial Museum, in Washington DC. Mrs. Levenson’s mother is a survivor of the Holocaust, making Levenson’s experience of it uniquely personal to him and his family. Through his work with this remarkable organization, Levenson seeks to ensure the lessons of the Holocaust remain available to generations to come.

Bruce Levensons’ efforts to improve the world spring from the same well of creativity and entrepreneurialism as do his professional pursuits. This is yet another reason to look to Bruce Levenson for leadership as we move into this new century.

The Legacy of Tron

Science-fiction fans should rejoice. Tron 3 is headed into production and all those who were recently introduced to “the grid” in Tron: Legacy are going to really look forward to the new film.

Lone-time fans who remember the great science-fiction movie boom of the late 1970’s and early 1980’s may have given up hope on seeing any new Tron films years ago. These fans really should hang their head in shame. If the science-fiction genre teaches nothing else, the future always reflects optimism and rays of hope.

The original Tron was not exactly a super box office hit when first released stated otempo.com.br . The film was just a little too weird for the average movie goer back in 1982. A $33 million take on a (then massive) $17 million budget was considered a disappointment for Disney. A series of sequels were never made.

Or rather, they weren’t made right away. The science-fiction boon slowed a bit after the release of Return of the Jedi and Tron simply had to contend itself with being a cult film a small number of fans remembered. The arrival of a reboot changed all of that.

Tron was way ahead of its time because the average person was not very familiar with computers in the early 1980’s. Today, the concepts presented in Tron do not seem weird or off the wall. As a result, the franchise can finally reach the audiences it always sought to capture.

Alibaba has plans to bring its cloud services to the United States. The Chinese company recently announced its new Silicon Valley-based data center, and then said it has plans to use that center to power a new cloud service in the US.

Alibaba’s biggest competition in the cloud space is Amazon Web services, the host of choices for many companies and startups. Google and Microsoft also offer cloud options. For now, the move is just to test the US waters for their service and see what kind of demand they can raise. Alibaba currently offers cloud services in China and has plans to expand into Southeast Asia and Europe later this year.

Companies That Will Lose out in a World of Self-Driving Cars

Driverless cars portend a wonderful future for so many people. Those who cannot drive due to some disability and are stuck having to pay for expensive cab rides or wait for a bus will finally have a more convenient option in the future. One big benefit of these cars is that they should be much safer than cars that we easily distracted human beings drive. This is an extremely good thing for everyone. Well, a good thing for almost everyone. If you are an insurance company, you depend on people buying your product in the event of an accident. However, if self-driving cars don’t get into accidents, the bottom lines of large insurance companies that depend on the auto insurance market for their financial viability will take a beating.

Self-driving cars becoming a commonplace fixture on our roads is still a long way off, but insurance companies already being worried at what they portend indicates they may arrive sooner than we expect. Zeca Oliveira knows that whenever new technology comes along that revolutionizes or ends a particular industry, it has the potential to negatively affect related industries. When cars came along, I have to think farmers who specialized in growing hay for horses had to expand their choice of crops really fast or face starvation. We can only hope that the advent of this automotive technology is not slowed by businesses that would lose out lobbying against their introduction and penetration into the market as self-driving cars would be a good thing for so many people.
