Miscellaneous / Performance

  1. Close all applications when running Photoshop. This will free up CPU and memory resources for Photoshop.

  2. Add more memory to your machine. When Photoshop runs out of memory and has to use the scratch disk as virtual memory, performance will drop off very quickly.

  3. Close the Bridge after opening an image in Photoshop. All the thumbnails and preview images in the Bridge use vast amounts of precious memory.

  4. Do not have the histogram open while developing. This is especially important if Cache Levels is set to one, as recommended when using FFDD. If the histogram is open, Photoshop will try to update it continuously, which will seriously impair processing.

  5. Run with the lowest number of History States possible. While history states provide the convenience of multiple undos, they also use very large amounts of memory to save past steps. Zero to three states is recommended.

  6. Remove plugins that are not ever used. This will speed Photoshop load time, and free up memory. One way to disable plugins is to move them outside of the Photoshop plugin directory.

  7. Remove or disable presets, fonts, and ICC color profiles that are never used.

  8. In Photoshop->Preferences->Display & Cursors try Use Pixel Doubling.
